October 11, 2001 – Benton Harbor, Mich. – Here's a belated pat on the back for Whirlpool Corporation and its efforts to help North America's homeless and poorly housed through Habitat for Humanity®. The days after the Sept. 11 tragedy were no time for self-congratulation. Still, it was during this period that Habitat held a weeklong celebration for its 25th anniversary in Indianapolis, at which Whirlpool was cited as the group's largest corporate contributor. Some exhibitors had cancelled out of the gathering of corporate sponsors, but Whirlpool kept its commitment to display its new lineup of products available to Habitat families, including the ENERGY STAR® qualified refrigerator and Resource Saver laundry pair. Colette Wismer, purchase experience manager, Whirlpool brand, made it all happen seamlessly. Dan Sheehan, division director, Midwest, who also worked at the Whirlpool booth, said: "I've never been more proud to be a Whirlpool employee than at this event. We have literally seen hundreds of people telling us about the impact of our contribution to the thousands of Habitat families." Moreover, Ali Evans and Lauren Rogers, both from Whirlpool brand marketing, also volunteered to work on one of the 25 new Habitat houses being built in a downtown neighborhood in Indianapolis. Whirlpool has pledged up to $25 million worth of appliances for homes built by Habitat between 2000 and 2005, the time span for Habitat initiative "More Than Houses: Rebuilding Our Communities." That translates into a Whirlpool brand refrigerator and freestanding range for every Habitat Home built in the United States and Canada. "Whirlpool is right to be proud of its contributions to this fine organization and the work it does to provide shelter for those who can't afford it," said Ted Dosch, vice president, Finance, North American Region, and executive sponsor for Habitat. "It's a worthy cause -- and one that displays the giving spirit of our company." In addition to the $25 million contribution, Whirlpool also sponsors several Habitat builds in plant communities throughout the country, while the Whirlpool brand also sponsors Habitat's "Women Build" projects. In the company's headquarters community of Benton Harbor, a Habitat home is being built entirely by Whirlpool volunteers. Also, Whirlpool Foundation has donated more than $200,000 to Habitat. > back |
