 January 20, 2000 – Benton Harbor, Mich. – Whirlpool Corporation will extend and expand on its commitment to Habitat for Humanity® International by donating a Whirlpool brand refrigerator and freestanding range to homes built in the United States and Canada. Our company made the pledge on Saturday, under Habitat's new "More Than Houses" program, a campaign to build 100,000 new homes by the year 2005. Previously we had announced a donation of up to $5 million in appliances for homes built by Habitat. "We are truly grateful to Whirlpool for making such a generous pledge of support," said Millard Fuller, president and chief operating officer, Habitat for Humanity®. "Literally, thousands of families will benefit from this exciting partnership. "This expanded partnership between Whirlpool North America and Habitat for Humanity® is designed to support the nonprofit organization both at a local level and nationally," said Mike Thieneman, executive vice president, North American Region (NAR), who was present alongside Jack Kemp, former secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, who is helping to lead Habitat's campaign. Thieneman added, "Our commitment symbolizes the spirit of our company and the heart of our people." Under the terms of the agreement, Whirlpool and Habitat will collaborate in marketing and promotional campaigns with consumers and trade partners to raise awareness of Habitat's goal to eliminate homelessness and substandard housing in North America. Habitat for Humanity® International, based in Americus, Ga., is a nonprofit, ecumenical organization that brings together people with resources and people in need to build simple, decent, affordable housing. Houses are sold to homeowners at no profit and financed through zero-interest mortgages. > back |
