January 13, 2000 – Benton Harbor, Mich. – A team of 12 women from Whirlpool Corporation will work with other female volunteers to build a Habitat for Humanity® house during the International Builders' Show (IBS) in Dallas beginning Friday.
The 12 women represent our U.S. manufacturing facilities and the Dallas contract sales office. Joining our volunteers will be Cathy Keating, wife of Oklahoma's governor, and Janet Huckabee, who is married to the governor of Arkansas. In addition, Linda Fuller, co-founder of Habitat for Humanity® International, and volunteers from the Habitat for Humanity® affiliate in the Dallas area will be on hand to help.
The women will participate in a "blitz build" -- constructing the house from Friday through Sunday outside of Hall A of the Dallas Convention Center. After the show, the house will be transported to a permanent location in Dallas.
The 12 Whirlpool women who make up the first Whirlpool-Habitat Women Build team are:
- Patty Young, operator (Benton Harbor Division)
- Trish Beier, senior quality engineer (Clyde Division)
- Carolyn Douglas, supervisor (Evansville Division)
- Sandy Franks, human resources director (Findlay Division)
- Mickie Matthews, coordinator and model technician (Fort Smith Division)
- Jamie Hunt, stand-mixer sub-assembler (Greenville Division)
- Dorrie Heath, material control assistant (LaPorte Division)
- Lavonzale Saddler, built-in refrigerator technician (LaVergne Division)
- Marcia Middleton, coordinator (Marion Division)
- Kim White, human resources manager (Oxford Division)
- Deborah Lewis, service coordinator (Tulsa Division)
- Melony Combs, contract accounts manager (Dallas sales office)
The Whirlpool brand is partnering with Habitat for Humanity® on 20 Whirlpool-Habitat Women Build projects across the country. At these 20 projects, crews of women will construct the houses from foundation to completion.
The Whirlpool-Habitat Women Build projects seek to promote the involvement of women in the construction of Habitat houses. The Women Build effort fosters a sense of empowerment and allows women to develop new skills.
"Our brand stands for empowering women and nurturing of their families, which is a common theme with Habitat's Women Build projects," said Paula Cacossa, director of Customer Loyalty and Relationships. "Through this partnership, we believe we can foster these ideals to our target customers."
Most of the women who will represent our company at the Dallas construction site were chosen because of involvement with community projects. Many are participants in their local affiliates of Habitat for Humanity®.
"We're extremely proud that women from our U.S. manufacturing divisions will take part in this historic event," said J.C. Anderson, senior vice president, Group Manufacturing and Product Delivery, North American Region (NAR). "We appreciate the opportunity to involve our people with a team that is making a difference in the campaign for decent and affordable housing."
