How important is consumer product safety to Whirlpool Corporation?
In 1996, Whirlpool was recognized for its commitment to safety by being awarded the CPSC Chairman's Commendation for Significant Contributions to Product Safety. Whirlpool pioneered the development of magnetic closures on refrigerator doors designed to dramatically reduce the number of child entrapments. "I can think of no company more deserving than Whirlpool" said Ann Brown, CPSC Chairman.

What research has Whirlpool Corporation done to better understand women and family issues?
To learn more about the complexities of contemporary family life and guide grant making in this area, Whirlpool Foundation embarked on a four-part global research initiative to explore women's views and attitudes on work, family and society. Why study women? Because women are at the core of many changes affecting contemporary family life today.

Does Whirlpool Corporation care about me and my family?
Whirlpool Corporation established Whirlpool Foundation to support social issues such as lifelong learning, cultural diversity and economic self-sufficiency for families. The foundation also supports employees who contribute to non-profit organizations, and who volunteer their time. In 1995, Whirlpool Foundation studied North American and European women's views on work, family and society, to better understand what's important to today's women, and how the Foundation might support their needs. Since its founding in 1951, Whirlpool Foundation has granted more than $68 million to charitable organizations around the globe.

Free-Standing Cooking

Do I have to purchase a special kit to convert a Whirlpool® gas range to L.P. gas?
Most Whirlpool ranges can be converted from natural to L.P. gas by making adjustments to the pressure regulator, cooktop burners, oven burner and either the broiler burner or the oven thermostat. We recommend this conversion ONLY be done by a Whirlpool designated servicer.

What are "sealed gas burners?"
Sealed gas burners eliminate the extra time-consuming chore of lifting up burners to clean. The burner box has been eliminated and there are no gaps around burners to collect spills and grease. Not only is it easier to clean but is more attractive then regular gas burners.

How hot does a self-cleaning oven get during the cleaning process?
In self-cleaning electric ranges, the oven temperature rises to approximately 875 degrees F., the temperature needed to burn off food soil. When the temperature reaches approximately 560 degrees, the oven door locks automatically and the lock light comes on. At the end of the cleaning cycle, the oven turns off automatically. When the oven has cooled down to approximately 520 degrees, the lock is released, the locked light goes out, and the oven door can be opened. The self-cleaning pyrolytic oven is available in both electric and gas ranges.

What is a "CleanTop" ceramic cooking surface?"
The CleanTop® cooking system is sealed into the upswept porcelain cooktop of the range. It has no reflector bowls, trim or seams to collect dirt and crumbs. The Ceran® one-piece panel is tough, nonporous and resists spills or scratches with normal use. Simply wipe and clean, or use a razor blade scraper on encrusted substances. Available on electric free-standing ranges and built-in cooktops.

Are special pots and pans need for use on the CleanTop® cooking system?
No, but flat-bottomed utensils will provide the best results. Avoid utensils or pans with curved bottoms. They interfere with heat conduction and lead to longer cooking times. Flat-bottomed utensils with copper or aluminum bottoms are recommended. Check a pot or pan by placing a ruler along its bottom. Is there any space between the ruler and the pan? If so, you won't get optimal results.

Microwave Ovens

Which microwave system gives the best performance – the turntable or the stirrer?
Microwave energy usually enters the oven cavity from the top and flows down. For best results, you must distribute the energy throughout the food during the entire cooking process. You either move the food through the waterfall of microwave energy (with a turntable), or distribute the energy before it reaches the food (with a stirrer system). If your microwave oven does not use a turntable, it probably has a stirrer system. For most everyday microwave cooking you won't notice much difference between the two systems.

Can I build my microwave in to get it off the counter?
No one has enough counterspace. Whirlpool offers trim kits that enable you to build microwaves over a single gas or electric built-in oven. Mid-size microwaves can be mounted under the cabinet with a mounting kit.

Should I buy a microwave oven with a browner?
It depends on the kind of cooking that you will be doing. Baked goods will never brown but meats with high levels of fat, like bacon, will brown. An oven without a browner is easier to clean since it never cooks the food onto the cavity wall, like in a conventional oven.

What is a microwave-convection oven?
It's the best of both worlds...microwave and thermal cooking. The oven is really three oven functions in one cavity. First, it's a cool, straight microwave. Second, it is a small hot oven that operates on 110 volts and has a fan inside the cavity to move the air and speed cooking. Third, you can marry the two functions so that you can "combination" cook with the speed of microwaves and heat to do some browning. It's available as a countertop or an over-the-range microwave.

Dishwashers

How loud is the dishwasher when operating?
Whirlpool Brand dishwashers are quiet! The SOUND-LOCK™ noise absorber is affixed to the motor of the Quiet Partner™ to cancel motor noise and vibrations. Also, visco-elastic insulation is strategically placed on key noise points to help dampen escaping sounds. Models: DU980.

Do you have to rinse your dishes before placing them in the dishwasher?
Power Clean™ 3-level wash system requires no pre-rinsing. Dishes can go straight from the table to the dishwasher! A heavy duty stainless steel food grinder rotates at 3400RPM to pulverize remaining food particles. A specially designed accumulator chamber in the pump traps soils and keeps them from redepositing on clean dishes. Models: DU840CWD, DU900PCD, DU915QWD, DU920QWD, DU940QWD, DU980QPD, DP920QWD, DU930QWD.

Are dishes easy to load in your dishwasher?
An exclusive in-the-door removable silverware and cutlery basket provides extra capacity in the lower rack while eliminating the need to reach over sharp objects. Infinite-position upper rack saves time loading. It raises up or down to accommodate large items or tall stemware in the upper rack. Fold down cup shelves in the upper rack hold lightweight items in place plus double coffee cup capacity. Fold down tines in the lower rack make way for pots and pans. Models: Features vary depending on model. DU900 and above.

Have you ever had a recall on any of your dishwashers?
Yes, on May 29, 1996, we announced a voluntary recall on some Whirlpool and Kenmore brand dishwashers due to wiring in the door latch that may overheat and catch fire. At our expense we have to date repaired over 180,000 dishwashers.

Washers

What is the capacity of your largest top-loading traditional washer?
The Super Capacity Plus holds 18 lbs. and is 3.0 cubic feet.

What is the Plus in Super Capacity Plus?
Two or three speed motor and Xtra Roll Action™® agitator.

Will the self cleaning lint filter plug the drain or septic system?
No, the lint comes off of the filter in very small particles and is easily taken down the drain.

Why don't you have a plastic basket?
Plastic baskets tend to "go out of round" during the spin cycle and can crack over time from flexing. Porcelain baskets will not stain and will resist mold and mildew.

Why does Whirlpool Brand have so many two speed washers? Isn't one speed enough?
With today's fabrics, a two speed washer is a MUST. The high speed agitate removes heavy soils while the low speed handles the delicate fabrics. The three-speed washer is the ultimate wash system for today's fabrics.

Dryers

Why do you sell three different capacities?
When drying, the more cubic feet of capacity, the more room clothes will have to spread out and the fewer wrinkles the clothes will have.

What is the difference between "Electronic Dry" and "Automatic Dry?"
Electronic Dry uses sensors to determine the amount of moisture left in the clothes and is the most accurate. Automatic Dry uses thermostats on the exhaust ducts to measure the dryness of clothes. The higher the temperatures, the dryer the clothes.

Does any other company manufacture a hamper door?
No. Only Whirlpool-built dryers have hamper doors.

Does Whirlpool Corporation build a combination washer and dryer?
No. Whirlpool built a combo in the 1950s but it was discontinued because it was very large and the wash and dry cycle took a long time. Today, Whirlpool builds a 24" washer with a dryer stacked on the top (24"w x 28"d x 72"h) and a 27" stacked pair (27"w x 32"d x 72"h). Whirlpool Corporation alone supplies the industry with the 24" configuration.

Freezers

What are the tradeoffs between "self defrost" and "manual defrost" models?
Self defrost models save you the time and hassle of manually defrosting your freezer. Generally speaking, frozen food items retain their "freshness" longer in manual defrost freezers. Defrosting models consume more energy, costing you more money to operate.

Can I install the freezer in my garage? Will a freezer operate properly in cold winter temperatures?
It depends! Whirlpool Corporation recommends that the air temperature be at least 55 degrees F. for best performance. Colder temperatures will impact the products ability to cool effectively. An air temperature below 55 degrees may result in the thermostat sensing the "exterior" air rather than the "interior" freezer compartment air, resulting in improper compressor cycling.

How often do I have to defrost a manual defrost freezer?
There are no hard "rules" for defrosting. Factors such as where you install the freezer in your home, where you live geographically and how often you open your freezer will impact your defrosting needs. Whirlpool recommends that you defrost your freezer when the interior frost (ice) buildup reaches 1/4".
