ENERGY STAR® was introduced by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 as a voluntary labeling program designed to identify and promote energy-efficient products, in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. EPA partnered with the US Department of Energy in 1996 to promote the ENERGY STAR® label, with each agency taking responsibility for particular product categories. ENERGY STAR® has expanded to cover new homes, most of the buildings sector, residential heating and cooling equipment, major appliances, office equipment, lighting, consumer electronics, and more product areas. Whirlpool Corporation offers ENERGY STAR® qualified washers, dishwashers, and freezers at significantly reduced prices to all Habitat for Humanity® homes built in North America. Beginning in September 2001, Whirlpool Corporation upgraded its refrigerator donations to include an ENERGY STAR® qualified model. The benefit a Habitat family receives from the ENERGY STAR® qualified refrigerator is not only energy savings, it’s also dollar savings. Based on standard US Government tests and national average cost per kilowatt-hour per year, the donated ENERGY STAR® qualified refrigerator’s yearly operating cost is only $36.
